The power transformer is an electrical equipment that needs continuous monitoring and fast protection since it is very expensive and essential element for power system to perform effectively. Various methods for the protection are available. Most of the methods should be known for the protection of the transformer before practically protecting the same. Here a review is presented for various methods available for the protection of transformer. The most common protection technique used is the percentage differential logic, which provides discrimination between different operating conditions and internal fault. Some condition as, inrush current and CT saturation can cause mis-operation of differential protection. Few methods to solve this problem are also reviewed. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) of power transformer is an investigative tool to monitor its health and to detect failures by recognizing anomalous patterns of DGA concentrations is also discussed. Transformers are a vital part of the transmission and distribution system. Monitoring transformers for problems before they occur can prevent faults that are costly to repair and result in a loss of service. Transformers being the essential part of power transmission system are expensive, as is the cost of power interruptions. Because of the cost of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, especially at remote sites, the utility industry has begun investing in instrumentation and monitoring of transformer. - The fundamental principle of differential protection sum of the currents entering a device through normal paths should be zero Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL).

- In a practical case study, the designed relay performance was tested under three real circumstances external fault, internal fault and inrush current.
- It was shown -using graphs and illustrations- that the presented relay issues trip alarm for transformer internal fault, and does not issue trip alarm for external fault and inrush current situations.
- It were seen that both estimation algorithms perform their job correctly.
- Walsh series acts better than least squares algorithm, especially on second harmonic estimation.
- An anti alias filter (for example a Butterworth one) will improve response of the estimator.
