A shortcut allows you to type an abbreviation like "idk" and have it replaced by a longer phrase like "I don't know." Keyboard shortcuts on the iPad work in the same way as the auto-correct feature. You type out the shortcut, and the iPad will automatically replace it with the whole phrase.

Here's how to set one up:

In the Keyboards section of Settings ( Settings > General > Keyboards ), tap Text Replacement .

Tap the plus sign in the upper-right corner to add a new shortcut.

Type the longer Phrase you want to use and the Shortcut to activate it in the text boxes.

Tap Save to save your shortcut.

When you type the shortcut you set, the iPad will automatically replace it with the phrase you tied it to.

How to Install a Custom Keyboard

To set up a custom keyboard , you must first download one of the App Store's alternative keyboards. There is even a keyboard from Grammarly that will check your grammar as you type.

Download the keyboard you want to add from the App Store.

In the Keyboard settings, tap the Keyboards heading.

Tap Add New Keyboard.

You will get a list of available keyboards that you have installed on the iPad. Tap the keyboard you want to activate.

You can remove a keyboard by tapping Edit on the custom keyboards page. The tap reveals a red circle with a minus sign next to the available keyboards. Tapping this button will remove the keyboard from the activated list. 

Deactivating a keyboard doesn't uninstall it. You must uninstall the app to delete the keyboard completely.

How to Change the iPad Keyboard to QWERTZ or AZERTY

The familiar QWERTY keyboard gets its name by the five letters across the top of the letter keys, and two popular variations (QWERTZ and AZERTY) get their name the same way. Change your iPad keyboard layout to either of these variations in the Keyboard Settings.

Access these alternative layouts by choosing Add a Keyboard and then finding them in the list of available layouts. They're both variations of the U.S. English version. In addition to QWERTZ and AZERTY, you can choose from other layouts like U.S. Extended or British.

• The QWERTZ layout is used in Central Europe, and it is sometimes known as a German layout. Its biggest difference is the exchanged placement of the Y and Z keys.
• French speakers in Europe often use the AZERTY layout. The main difference is the exchanged placement of the Q and A keys.

Add or change keyboards on iPad

On iPad, you can turn typing features, such as spell checking, on or off; add keyboards for writing in different languages; and change the layout of your onscreen or wireless keyboard.

If you add keyboards for other languages, you can type in two languages without having to switch between keyboards. Your keyboard automatically switches between the two languages you use most often. (Not available for all languages.)

Add or remove a keyboard for another language

Tap Keyboards, then do any of the following:

Add a keyboard: Tap Add New Keyboard, then choose a keyboard from the list. Repeat to add more keyboards.

If you add a keyboard for a different language, the corresponding language is automatically added to the Preferred Language Order list. You can view this list and add languages to it directly in Settings > General > Language & Region. You can also reorder the list to change how apps and websites display text.

Switch to another keyboard

On an external keyboard: Press and hold Control, then press the Space bar to cycle between English, emoji, and other keyboards you add for different languages .

Assign an alternative layout to a keyboard

You can use an alternative keyboard layout that doesn’t match the keys on your keyboard.

Tap a language at the top of the screen, then select an alternative layout from the list.

Apple’s new Magic Keyboard is exciting news about where the iPad could be heading

A little more than iPad-geantry?

You can use your iPad as a laptop, they say. Just connect your Magic Keyboard for the authentic laptop experience, they claim. No, say I — tippy tapping my fingertips across its thin polyurethane frame. It just doesn’t feel right. Though it could , and it may .

According to Bloomberg’s Apple auteur, Mark Gurman, there’s a Magic Keyboard revamp on the horizon, and it’ll bring the iPad-as-a-laptop experience one step closer to reality. 

That's more like it

The revamped Magic Keyboard seeks to better simulate the MacBook’s iconic deck with a larger trackpad, and even an aluminum façade. The leap to an aluminum body makes for a sturdier frame, avoiding many of the issues of wear and tear that the softer polymer that adorns the current model.

Fans of the folio look that the Magic Keyboard offers won’t be disappointed, as sources have revealed to Gurman that the external shell of Apple’s accessory won’t be switching to Space Grey aluminum any time soon — otherwise retaining the same chic look and style of the current model, potentially the same cantilever support, and including the Magic Keyboard’s familiar hinge-based USB-C port . 

Why it's exciting

Apple revamping the Magic Keyboard isn’t exactly stealing fire from the gods. But it could be a further indication of Apple’s plan to one day modularize the MacBook experience. We’ve previously covered news about patents relating to modular MacBook components , and this new iPad deck could be the Cupertino brand’s first step in that direction.

The patent in question gave us a glimpse at a MacBook composed of hot-swappable pieces to configure your laptop as you please. Including touchscreen displays, touchscreen input panels, and keyboard.

The switch to an aluminum frame for the Magic Keyboard’s deck might seem small, but it does play into the desire shown by Apple to give its powerful slate a more MacBook-like feel. Is the new Magic Keyboard going to be a part of this future modular MacBook experience? That’s unlikely.

The patent in question showcases a “base” component to which everything else connects. But this shift to a more accurate laptop feel could be paving the way for a more natural introduction of this modular design further down the line.

The revamped Magic Keyboard is expected to release alongside new M3-powered iPad Pros, though there's no word on when to expect the announcement of these super-charged slates.

However, we don't expect them to be making an appearance during Apple's September event later this month. Nor would we expect them to make an appearance before Apple have announced its new line-up of M3 MacBook Pro models expected to launch at some point in October.

The Lenovo Tab Extreme is the iPad Pro competitor we're not talking about enough

I almost heard a swell of harps as I unboxed the Lenovo Tab Extreme . In all its grandeur, with a 14.5-inch OLED display, the Lenovo Tab Extreme promises both entertainment and productivity experiences from the comfort of your lap. And it delivers.

2-in-1 tablets are a hot commodity right now, and this $949 tablet is no exception; You'd be lucky to catch it in stock. But even with how popular 2-in-1 tablets are, the Lenovo Tab Extreme likely sells as well as inventory will make you believe because it's just a really good device. Let me break it down.

The Lenovo Tab Extreme has a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. It features an imposing 14.5-inch 3K OLED display and comes with a Lenovo Precision Pen 3.

To start, it's built for consumers who want to go from work to leisure without skipping a beat. The Tab Extreme has a Storm Grey exterior and features 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a USB-C 3.2 port, a USB-C 2.0 port, and a microSD card slot. At 12.9 x 8.3 x 0.23 inches, the Lenovo Tab Extreme doesn't go unnoticed, and it weighs a healthy 1.6 pounds.

The top half of the Extreme is like a high-end laptop condensed into tablet form. It's designed to be robust yet versatile and sleek, built with a vibrant OLED 3,000 x 1,876 pixels display for deep blacks and rich colors. You can buy one, along with a dual-hinge keyboard folio case, right now for $1,000 (currently $100 off).

At almost two pounds, moving around with the Lenovo Tab Extreme is not an easy lift, so to speak. But arranging the tablet with the keyboard addition makes getting the bundle a must. I can't imagine having the same experience of a 2-in-1 tablet without the included keyboard case. The Tab Extreme's keyboard case lets you smoothly switch angles for a more comfortable view.

The truth is, I can imagine going without the folio case, having tested the Samsung Tab S9 Ultra, which is roughly the same size and does not come with a keyboard case -- and it's not the same experience. The keyboard case combines the functionalities of a tablet and laptop into one, which makes me reach for the Lenovo Tab Extreme more often than any other tablet I have at home. 

But it's not just about look and feel; the Lenovo Tab Extreme performs as well as it looks.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is a top-tier processor that makes for smooth app launches, loading, and efficient multitasking without draining your battery. It makes it easy to edit images in Photoshop while listening to music and writing this article without experiencing any noticeable lag.

The battery has consistently lasted over eight hours of continuous use for me, with its best day topping out at nine hours and 52 minutes. I tested it over a few days to browse the web on Wi-Fi and streamed videos when I was not actively using it until the battery drained to zero. 

Those numbers are not as long-lasting as competing tables, like the iPad Pro and even the Samsung Tab S9 Ultra , but it also charges fast, going from a dead battery to 68% in about 39 minutes.

I did find some drawbacks in the Lenovo Tab Extreme's performance, which can be traced back to its Android-based software, and the inability to use some Windows-supported services means I can't guarantee that the Tab Extreme will be a laptop replacement for all.

While there are some helpful multitasking features like floating windows, you may encounter some bumps when quickly switching between services. For example, jumping between Photoshop and Outlook led to some stuttering every now and then. These little bugs, though short-lived, are noticeable and can be frustrating.

The Lenovo Tab Extreme's 3K display is a beautiful thing to behold, making 1080p videos look better than they should and large enough to make you forget that it's a tablet you're watching that new Netflix show on. The only problem is that the display brightness struggles when outdoors. 

The display only reaches up to 500 nits at peak brightness, which is only about half of the peak brightness on the iPad Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. For reference, my iPhone 14 Pro Max has a peak brightness of about 2,000 nits.

This means it's a gorgeous tablet to enjoy a book or stream a movie on during a fun trip to the beach, as long as you're under a parasol.

Video calls on the Lenovo Tab Extreme run quite smoothly thanks to the 13MP front and rear cameras. The front camera placement is in the middle of the screen when the tablet is in landscape mode or on the keyboard folio case, which is the right orientation for tablets.

This placement makes for a better experience than the iPad Pro's front-facing camera, which is at the top of the screen when the tablet is in portrait position, resulting in people looking like they're looking off to one side when they have video calls with the iPad in landscape orientation.

Because the Lenovo Tab Extreme supports video output through the USB-C port, it's perfect when used as an external monitor for work and play.

The Lenovo Tab Extreme also has Freestyle, an integration similar to Samsung's Second Screen capability. Freestyle is a free app included in the Lenovo Tab Extreme that gives users the ability to collaborate with others by connecting the Tab Extreme to a Windows computer. This extends the desktop experience into the Lenovo tablet. 

ZDNET's buying advice

The Lenovo Tab Extreme is an outstanding competitor to the iPad Pro, especially considering it's cheaper than Apple's flagship tablet, albeit with some compromises in performance and brightness. 

From movie buffs, readers, audiophiles, and professionals, the Lenovo Tab Extreme best suits creatives and executives. If you're in the market for a premium 2-in-1 tablet with a large, high-quality display, you can't go wrong with the Lenovo Tab Extreme with the keyboard folio case for $1,100 , which is (fortunately) in stock at the time of writing.
