Is Zoom giving you problems and you can’t seem to fix them? Video conferencing software is more popular than ever, with thousands of companies turning to teleworking to keep their employees in the loop. Zoom and other online meeting tools  make that easier than ever, but as with any other software, issues will arise, and they disrupt or even prevent good video calls.

Fortunately, while there are Zoom service outages you can’t do much about, you often can fix typical problems yourself. To help get your Zoom calls working properly, we’ve collected the most common Zoom problems users face and have provided easy solutions to be able to fix them.

Nothing is more frustrating than having your webcam or audio not work on a Zoom call. If your web camera is not showing up or is selected but not working, try some of these basic tips  first.

Solution 1: Check Zoom settings

On the pop-up that prompts for a meeting ID just before joining a call, leave the following settings unchecked:

  • Do Not Connect to Audio
  • Turn Off My Video

This allows you to join a call with your audio and video automatically enabled.

Solution 2: Exit other related apps

If your webcam isn’t showing up, make sure all other programs that use the webcam are closed. Zoom may not be able to use the camera if it’s currently being accessed by a different application.

Solution 3: Test the audio and video

If your webcam or audio issues persist, you can test your audio and video in Zoom by clicking this link . Once open, you can join a test call on the Zoom application and follow the instructions on the screen.

Solution 4: Check PC settings

Sometimes, the problem might not be Zoom at all. If you’re on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC or Mac, the webcam might be blocked. You can correct this by checking your app permissions to make sure the Zoom app or your web browser can use your webcam.

On the web specifically, you can also check this setting by restarting your call and making sure you press Allow when prompted about the camera and mic access.

Enter “webcam” in the taskbar search box and select C hoose Which Apps Can Access Your Camera from the menu. Scroll down, and you’ll see the list of Microsoft Store and desktop applications that are allowed to use your webcam.

For non-Microsoft Store apps, like Zoom, you’ll need to make sure the toggle for Allow Desktop Apps to Access Your Camera is switched to the On position . In the same way, you can also search for Microphone and choose  Microphone Privacy Settings to do the same.

In Windows 11, type  Webcam in the Start Menu and click the  Camera Privacy Settings  link. From there, scroll down to let desktop apps access your camera , and make sure that the toggle switch is  On .

Open System Preferences and select Security and Privacy. After that, click the lock icon and enter your password to make changes. You can then click Camera from the sidebar and make sure your desired web browser and Zoom are checked. You’ll also want to make sure the box for the device’s microphone is checked.

Note: Some laptops also have a physical webcam switch that must be enabled to allow the webcam to function properly. Double-check that yours is in the right position if you have one.

Solution 5: Reinstall Zoom

If all else fails, uninstall the software. The next time you try to join or start a virtual meeting, the web browser client should download the software for you. You also can manually install the software from Zoom .

Another common problem with Zoom is an audio echo during a meeting. If you hear an audio echo or feedback, there are three possible reasons why.

Solution 1: Limit the input

Someone could have both computer and telephone audio active at the same time. In this case, ask them to either hang up on the telephone call or exit the PC-based audio during the conference by clicking the up arrow icon next to the microphone icon and choosing Leave Computer Audio. 

Solution 2: Move or disable external speakers

Computer or telephone speakers might be too close to each other. Ask the two people that are too close to each other to move apart or shut a door. You could also ask one of them to leave the audio conference or mute audio on their device; though muting by itself may not always be as effective in reducing the echo. Using headphones helps reduce the echoing effect, too.

Solution 3: Disable additional audio

Multiple computers with active audio could be in the same conference room. Again, ask the two people that are too close to each other to move apart or close a door. You can also ask one of them to leave the audio conference, mute audio on their device, or wear headphones.

Lagging and freezing usually indicate a problem with your internet connection. Here’s what to do about choppy video quality:

Solution 1: Change the connection

On a mobile device, move to an area with a better connection to see if this helps. On PCs, stick with a wired Ethernet connection, if possible. Otherwise, get close to the local router and use the 5GHz connection — it’s faster and (typically) less congested. If you need an upgrade, here’s our guide to the best wireless routers  you can get.

Solution 2: Check the connection speed

Aim for the right internet speeds for a successful video chat. When talking with multiple people in a team setting, you want the upload speed around 1Mbps and the download speed around 600Kbps. You can always check your current speeds with a quick internet speed test . If the speeds are undesirable, repeat Solution 1. Also, you can check out our tips on how to increase internet speed.

Solution 3: adjust Zoom settings

Try unchecking the HD and Touch Up My Appearance options. To access these options, click the cog icon ( Settings ) on the main screen of the Zoom desktop app, or click the arrow icon within the video camera icon during a call and then select Video Settings on the pop-up menu. After that, select the Video category listed on the left (if it isn’t already selected).

By unchecking these two options, you will decrease the amount of bandwidth your video connection requires (and the overhead on your system’s hardware), which can help fix problems with lag.

I can’t share my screen

Sharing your screen is an important part of many Zoom calls. It’s as easy as clicking Share Screen at the bottom of the Zoom window. If you’re planning to share your screen during a call, check a couple of settings first.

Solution 1: Check your connection

Sharing your screen takes up a lot of bandwidth. Make sure that you have a solid internet connection and that you’re connected to the call. Use a wired connection, if available, for the best performance.

Solution 2: Try a Share Screen meeting

On the home screen, click the down arrow icon next to New Meeting and uncheck Start With Video . Your meeting will then start with only audio, freeing up bandwidth. Your video will not be automatically turned on.

Alternatively, if you’re already on a call and need to share your screen, turn off your video by clicking the Stop Video button and then select the green Share Screen button.

When sharing your screen, the viewer can request remote control to help you troubleshoot or explain a process more clearly. This tool is listed as Request Remote Control under View Options and can be accessed at any time while sharing the screen. If you want to enable remote control, but it’s not working properly, there are several possible issues to consider.

Solution 1: Allow remote control

Chances are, the sharer (host) is not agreeing to the request for remote control. A notification will pop up on their screen, and they must choose Allow to enable remote control.

Solution 2: Don’t interfere with the host PC

The sharer (host) may be interrupting the process. Technically, the person sharing their screen can stop the remote control at any time by clicking their mouse. Always leave the host computer alone while the viewer (client) assumes remote control.

Solution 3: Find a compatible device

You could be on the wrong device. iPad and Android devices, for example, cannot give or request remote control, but someone else can give them control.

Another common problem is not being able to receive email messages from Zoom. This can include notifications and activation emails. These can take up to 30 minutes to arrive and may take longer. If it doesn’t arrive, you need to make sure that your email is configured properly.

Usually, this isn’t something on your end, so you’ll need to ask your IT department to whitelist Zoom’s email IP addresses . If you’re using Gmail or a personal email service, check your spam folder too. Emails will come from [email protected] .

Solution 1: Check for service issues

Check Zoom Service Status and Downdetector to see if there is a regional Zoom problem. Sometimes there are server issues or platform maintenance, which could mean the service will be down for a while. You will need to wait, if this is the case.

Solution 2: Use the web version

Try the web version if the problem isn’t regional. As long as your internet connection is sufficient, it tends to be a bit more reliable if the installed app is experiencing problems.

Solution 3: Dheck Zoom settings

Sometimes Zoom can get confused about audio versus video settings. If it’s trying to use your webcam connection as an audio output, for example, it will often start crashing as a result. Make sure video connections are routed to your webcam and, if necessary, your audio is routed to connected speakers.

Yes, Zoom bombing is a thing. It’s a growing fad of joining a private meeting and disrupting it with anything from blaring music to porn — even courtrooms aren’t immune . If someone Zoom-bombed your meeting in the past, there is one solution that is incredibly effective at preventing future invasions.

Solution 1: Require a passcode!

The host creating the meeting and sending out invitations can require all participants to enter a passcode before joining. That means strangers have a hard time finding ways to drop in. In fact, requiring a password is set as the default.

Ultimately, this will help protect content and prevent more advanced versions of Zoom-bombing, even if you are using a free account.

I can’t add Zoom’s extension to Outlook app

If the Zoom add-on isn’t working with Outlook and you’ve tried updating the Outlook app, we highly suggest taking the problem to IT. This is usually an issue with allowing the right URLs or sites on your network, so IT will need to manage the details. If you are using Zoom on your own, there are a couple of things you can try.

Solution 1: Manage your trusted sites

Visit the Security tab in Windows under the Internet section. Look for the Trusted Sites section, and visit the Sites section. If there’s an error message here, add the URL that the error message cites. If there isn’t a message, use “https://zoom.us” and select Add . Make sure Protected Mode is enabled, and security is set to Medium-high.

My Zoom meeting won’t record

Do you not have the option to record your Zoom meeting? It’s probably an issue with your permissions. Here’s what to do.

Solution 1: Manage Zoom permissions

Only hosts can record Zoom meetings, or pass that ability on to someone else. If you’re supposed to be the recorder in your meeting, ask your host to give you permission with the Participants menu, where the More button will show an option to Allow Record .

Solution 2: Ese built-in screen recorders

This is somewhat clunky, but both Windows and macOS have built-in screen recorders you can turn on to capture the portion of the screen where your Zoom meeting is taking place.

I’m too worried about Zoom security to use it for my business

That’s understandable, as Zoom has had several security flaws in the past, including a notorious bug that allowed hackers to take control of Mac computers . That gave many business users pause, although you don’t have to give Zoom up if you rely on it.

Solution 1: Update consistently

Zoom has been pretty good at pushing fast patches for its bugs, especially security fixes to keep Zoom use safely. The company also provides detailed information about its latest releases to review. If Zoom is always updated, it’s certainly safer to use.

Is Zoom down?

First and foremost, if you can't get Zoom to work, you should check Zoom's service status to see if the problem is at Zoom's end. Point your browser at status.zoom.us and you'll be able to see if any of Zoom's services aren't working, any ongoing problems and what's being done about it.

General Zoom problem fixes 

Shut down apps you're not using: Zoom and any video application can be demanding on your computer and internet connection, so it's worth shutting down apps you don't need if you're having problems. That frees up resources for Zoom to use.

Make sure you're using the latest version of Zoom: There have been a number of Zoom updates recently, the latest version at the time of writing is Zoom 5.9.3, so it's worth checking that you're using the latest version of the app. You'll usually be prompted to update when you open Zoom if there's an update, but it's always worth checking, as some features change between updates.

My app keeps crashing or closing: First of all, do both of the things above. If you're still having problems, try restarting your computer. If that doesn't solve it, check if there are any software updates for your computer.

Zoom says my connection is unstable: Unfortunatly this happens from time to time. This is a local connection problem so the first thing is to check your Wi-Fi connection or wired connection. It's worth running a speed test - just Google speed test and you'll get the option to run a quick test where you can see if there really is a speed problem. If you're using Wi-Fi, see if you can plug into a wired connection instead, as it's likely to be more stable than Wi-Fi, or move closer to your router. This is definitely worth doing if you always have a connection problem on Zoom. If it's a one-off problem, there's likely nothing you can do about it except wait for the problem to pass - you could try stopping all other activity on your connection to let Zoom have all the bandwidth available.

Fixing audio problems on Zoom

Check you're not muted: When you join a Zoom meeting you'll normally have to click to activate the microphone, because you're muted. Look for the microphone icon in the bottom left hand corner, if it's crossed out, click it to unmute your microphone. If you're on the mobile app, you'll have to "join with audio" to be able to speak or hear sound.

If using an external microphone: Many external mics have they own mute feature - make sure the mic itself isn't muted.

Check your Bluetooth connection: If you join a call and no one can hear you, check you're not connected to a Bluetooth headset elsewhere in the house. It might be that an existing connection has claimed your audio. Or, if you want to use a Bluetooth headset, make sure it's properly connected to the device running Zoom.

Check the audio source in Zoom: If you're in a call and no one can hear you, you can click on the up arrow to expand the audio button in the Zoom app. You'll then see the options available on your computer so you can use the correct microphone.

Check the audio settings in Zoom: Similar to above, if you're not in a meeting you can open Zoom, open the settings and head to "audio". Here you'll have the option to set your preferences as well as test the microphone and speaker on your PC to see if it's working. If your mic is too quiet, you can turn up the levels here.

My Mac can't access the mic: Sometimes your Mac might say it can't access the microphone and ask you to restart. This might then ask for admin permission. Entering your details can then correct the mic fault without having to restart.

Ensure your PC audio settings are correct: If you've not been able to fix the problem through Zoom itself, then check your settings or preferences on your computer. Above everything else, check they actually work to help isolate the problem.

Background noise is disrupting the call: If there's too much noise around you - people in the house, traffic noise, animals, aircraft, then consider using a noise cancelation app like Krisp . This can cut the background noise so you come across sounding clearer. It can also cut background noise from others on the call, so you don't hear their noise either. Zoom has its own background noise filter too, which you can find in settings.

There's no sound when sharing a video/YouTube: If you want to share video content with sound via screen sharing, you'll need to tick the "share computer sound" option when you share your screen. Otherwise the only sound people will get is that coming through your mic. This option is in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen share options.

There are echos or feedback on the audio: This usually happens when a mic detects audio coming from the speakers. It might be that the microphone is too close to the speakers, it might be that someone is using a phone and computer or that multiple computers are too close together. Muting the mic can resolve the problem or identify which participant(s) are causing the problems.

Fixing video problems in Zoom

No one can see me: If you can't be seen - and can't see yourself - start by checking you've started video on the call. Press the button in the bottom left-hand corner to make sure you've joined video on the call. Most calls start with video off.

Check the camera you're using: Just as with audio, Zoom will let you choose which camera  to use. Tap the arrow next to the video button and a list of available cameras will pop-up. Check you're not using a camera that's covered or on a closed (docked) laptop, for example. It's also here that you'd be able to find virtual cameras, if you wanted to turn yourself into a cat .

Confirm the video settings in Zoom: If you've tried both the above with no success, open the settings in the Zoom app and examine the "video" options. You'll be able to see a preview from your webcam and select the webcams available. If you can't see a webcam preview, you'll have to check your computer settings and check your webcam is properly installed.

My video is blocky and keeps freezing: Many quality issues in video are because of data. That might be because you don't have strong Wi-Fi, or there's someone else using bandwidth on your connection (streaming in 4K or downloading large files, for example). Try to limit other demanding services and ensure you have a good Wi-Fi signal, or a wired connection.

9 Common Zoom Call Issues and How to Fix Them

Did your Zoom call get disrupted? These general troubleshooting steps can help you solve any Zoom issues you might have.

Zoom is a video conferencing tool that saw a massive rise in users during 2020. As with any such program, you may sometimes encounter problems. The last thing you want when trying to talk is to battle against freezing video or echoing audio.

We're going to offer some general troubleshooting steps you can take to solve any Zoom problem you might have.

1. Check Zoom's Service Status

The first thing you should do is check Zoom's Service Status page . This tells you the current status of each component of Zoom, like meetings, video webinars, and cloud recording. With this, you can determine if the problem is on your end or Zoom's.

For each, you can see the status. Ideally everything should read "Operational", but you might also see "Degraded Performance" or "Under Maintenance".

Look further down the page and you will see more information about an issue, along with any updates and hopefully an estimated resolution time.

2. Update Zoom

Zoom should notify you of any updates when you open the client, but it's always good to manually check if you're having issues.

To do this, click your profile picture in the top-right, then click Check for Updates . If an update is available, it will download, after which you need to click Update to install it. Zoom will automatically restart when it's done.

If you run into any problems with this process, you can also update Zoom by downloading the latest version from the Zoom Download Center .

Of course, you should always keep Windows 10 and its drivers up-to-date too.

3. Use the Desktop Client

When you join a Zoom meeting, you have the option to use your browser or the program.

Sometimes, you may not have a choice but to use the web version, like if you're on a computer where you don't have permission to install programs.

However, whenever possible you should use the downloadable client. This is because it supports more features (including screen share), is quicker, and more reliable.

If you use the web version and encounter a problem, chances are switching to the desktop version will solve it.

4. Whitelist Zoom Emails

Zoom will send emails at various points, like to activate your account or remind you about a scheduled meeting.

If you aren't receiving these, and have waited at least 30 minutes, add [email protected] to your email whitelist. This will tell your email client that anything received from that address isn't spam and shouldn't be filtered.

If that still doesn't work, check out the Zoom support page for a list of IP addresses that you should also whitelist.

5. Check Your Internet Connection

Are you suffering from audio or video that keeps dropping out or lagging? Chances are, your internet connection is to blame.

First, ensure that nothing else is draining your connection, like any background downloads or someone streaming Netflix in the next room.

Second, click the settings cog in Zoom and go to the Video section. Ensure both Enable HD and Touch up my appearance are unchecked.

If it's still lagging, you may have to disable your webcam so that you're only sending audio and putting less of a strain on your internet connection.

If the problem persists across multiple calls, consider restarting your router or contacting your ISP to discuss your network speeds.

6. Suffering From Zoombombing

Zoombombing is a term used to describe unwanted intrusion into your Zoom call. Sometimes it could be a friend having a laugh, while other times it could be something more malicious.

When Zoom saw a surge in popularity due to the coronavirus pandemic, Zoombombing became quite the issue. Happily, the company released an update in May 2020 that made all meetings require a password for entry by default.

This was followed in June 2020 when end-to-end encryption became a feature for all members; it was previously a paid membership perk.

Zoombombing can still happen, though. An easy and obvious step is to not share your Zoom meeting details with anyone you don't want to join.

Also, once everyone is in the meeting, the host can click Participants > Three Horizontal Dots icon > Lock Meeting to stop anyone else joining.

7. Meetings End Too Soon

If the meeting host is on the free version of Zoom, meetings are limited to 40 minutes maximum. When the time limit is nearing, a warning message will display, after which the meeting will end.

Of course, you can stop this by signing up to Zoom's paid tiers. However, the easiest way is to simply create another meeting. There's no limit to the number of meetings you can host, so send out a fresh invite and get another 40 minutes.

8. Stop Echoing Audio

One of the most annoying problems with video conferences is when the audio echoes or when you can hear background noise.

Echoing audio usually occurs because someone has their microphone too close to their speakers. Alternatively, it might be that multiple people have joined the call from the same room.

If you're the person at fault, consider buying a home office headset so that your audio and microphone is contained to a single device.

Whatever the situation, the best way to overcome this is for everyone to mute their microphone when not speaking. Press Alt + A to mute and unmute quickly.

9. Resolve a Broken Webcam

An important part of many Zoom calls is being able to see the other participants on their webcam. However, what if your webcam isn't displaying?

On Zoom, click the settings cog and go to the Video tab. Use the Camera dropdown to select the webcam that you want to use.

If the webcam preview remains empty, it indicates a problem outside of Zoom. Press Windows key + I to open Settings and go to Privacy > Camera . Slide Allow apps to access your camera to On . Then, scroll down and slide Allow desktop apps to access your camera to On .

Zoom is one of the most popular video conferencing tools and is relatively easy to use. The problem is that it has its share of issues and vulnerabilities that often frustrate users. Luckily, you can fix most of these Zoom issues within minutes.

While uncommon, Zoom’s services can go down, causing temporal outages. This is one of the first things you should check whenever Zoom is not working. Luckily Zoom has its own status page , where you can see if any of its services are operational or not.

Of course, you can also use a third-party service like Down Detector . This page collects user reports and informs you when there’s a widespread outage, or the live map can inform you if there are any local issues.

Zoom users often have camera issues, so let’s look at some possible problems and their fixes. Let’s start with the most obvious potential issue. The camera may be turned off by default, so click the camera icon in the taskbar to turn it on. If an error message says that the video can’t be started when you click the button, the problem is your PC’s settings.

To fix this Zoom issue on Windows 11, go to the Windows Settings , enter Privacy & security, and select Camera . Make sure the toggle under the Camera access section is on. Also, ensure Zoom has access to the camera by toggling the option under the Let apps access your camera section.

  • Open the Windows Settings app.
  • Go into Privacy & security .
  • Select Camera .
  • Toggle on the Camera access option.
  • Ensure Zoom is toggled on under the Let apps access your camera section. Also, toggle on Let desktop apps access your camera .

If you have multiple cameras (like your laptop’s and a separate webcam), ensure you selected the right one in the settings. Go to Settings in Zoom and then Video to choose the right device.

If you use multiple apps that take advantage of the camera, other software might be occupying it. Make sure to close any unneeded apps. If all fails, Zoom recommends uninstalling and installing the application. You can also close and reopen the page if you’re using a browser.

Did you join a meeting and can’t hear anyone? If so, you probably closed the window that popped up before logging into a meeting. It’s one of the most common Zoom issues. Instead of closing it, make sure to press the Join with Computer Audio button instead. If you forget again, you can select the Audio option in the screen’s bottom-left corner during a meeting, and then click the already-mentioned Join with Computer Audio button.

If you clicked the button, but no one could hear you speak, you could have a muted mic. The mic icon in the bottom-left corner will be crossed out in this case. Click the icon to unmute yourself or press space — both options work.

This used to be a significant issue when Zoom was gaining popularity. Unexpected visitors would join meetings and start going crazy, going as far as sharing indecent images and videos. This even has a name — Zoombombing.

Zoom has implemented a few security measures that prevent Zoombombing altogether. In addition to a Zoom meeting ID, you also need a password to get into a meeting. Additionally, all attendees have to request to join a meeting. They can enter once the host lets them in. You can also enable a waiting room to create another barrier to entry. Go to Participants > three-dot More button > Enable Waiting Room to do this .

These improvements made by Zoom are significant, but there are still a few extra security measures you must keep in mind to prevent getting Zoombombed. The first one is to abstain from sharing your Zoom meeting’s ID publicly on Twitter or other public venues. This is just common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t follow this rule, including the United Kingdom’s prime minister. The same security measure applies to the meeting’s password as well.

These methods ensure unexpected visitors won’t appear in your meeting. But there are other tricks you can use for an additional layer of security. One of them is to lock the session after all the attendees have joined it. This means no one will be able to enter your meeting anymore, even if they have the meeting’s ID and password. Click the Participants tab and select the three-dot More option at the bottom. A few options will appear — the one to click is called Lock Meeting .

Also, remember that the host can easily remove unexpected visitors from a meeting if they still manage to get in. Click the Participants option in the taskbar, hover your mouse over a participant’s name, and click More followed by Remove .

If popular features, including the ability to only share a part of your screen with participants, don’t appear in your account, there’s no need to worry. You may have joined a meeting with a browser instead of the dedicated app.

Although Zoom works in browsers, the app offers more functionality. The time it takes to connect to a meeting is also a lot longer, and in some cases, the connection doesn’t get established.

Background noise is the worst and can come from all the participants who don’t mute their mics. Someone might have screaming kids running around the house, or a neighbor mowing the lawn. The noise makes it hard to hear the person speaking during a meeting and is generally unpleasant.

This problem wouldn’t exist if everyone turned off their mics when joining a meeting. Only the person who speaks at a given time should have the mic turned on. Sadly, that rarely happens.

To solve this issue, the host can mute all participants on entry. This means everyone will have their mic turned off by default when they join a meeting. This will prevent any possible background noise. You can do this by clicking the Participants button in the taskbar, selecting the three-dot More option, and then clicking on Mute Participants upon Entry .

You’ll also see a Mute All button after clicking on Participants . Throughout the meeting, it can be used if people unmute themselves and background noise creeps in.

It also helps to avoid any circling sound or outside noises. Users should avoid using external speakers, speakerphones, or any other noisemakers.

Is Zoom suddenly slowing down on you? Unexpected lagging or freezing is annoying, and the bad news is there’s not always an easy fix. One main issue could be your internet connection. You can run a speed test using something like SpeedTest.net . If your internet connection is acting up, your only solution is to move to another network. Another way to lower Zoom’s internet needs is to reduce the video resolution in the settings. Just click on the arrow pointing up button next to the camera button. Enter Video Settings and go into the Video tab. Uncheck HD .

If all fails, you might want to try restarting your computer or reinstalling Zoom. You can also restart your router or disconnect some devices from your network and see if that helps.

If you haven’t received the email, you need to activate your Zoom account; fear not. It will come; it may just take a while. While most activation emails are sent within seconds, some may take up to 30 minutes. There’s nothing to do on your end but to sit tight.

In case your Zoom account is managed by your company, and you don’t get the activation email after 30 minutes, the administrator should whitelist the [email protected] email along with the following IP addresses:

  • 198.2.179.123
  • 198.2.179.168
  • 198.2.179.86

Also, check if the activation email from Zoom is in the spam folder.

Zoom’s free plan is very generous, but it has several limitations you have to keep in mind to prevent running into problems. The biggest one is that group meetings can only last for a maximum of 40 minutes. Afterward, the system will log out all participants and terminate the session. Some users get confused after a meeting reaches an abrupt end.

Another limitation is that you can’t record to the cloud, so sharing a recording with your team is more time-consuming. Free users can record a meeting to their device, after which they can upload the recording to Google Drive or any other similar service and then share it with others. This may or may not be a big deal to you, but it’s something to consider. The good news is that, recently, Zoom has included the ability to use three whiteboards and messaging on the free plan.

Also, remember Zoom’s free plan supports a maximum of 100 participants per meeting and does not include a reporting dashboard that lets you see how many meetings are taking place, the total number of minutes spent in meetings, and other data. You also don’t access an admin panel that allows you to enable/disable certain features. These are the significant limitations to keep in mind, although there are a few others.

Sometimes we blame Zoom issues on many things, but forget about the possibility that the internet could be down. Try a simple Google search on the same device to see if you have an active internet connection. If you’re using Wi-Fi, maybe test other devices and see if those are connected.

If the problem is your Wi-Fi, try restarting your router and see if that kicks it back in gear. There’s usually a dedicated button to do this, but you can also unplug the unit and plug it back in.

Zoom has literally become a lifesaver for many people helping them connect with the outside world, whether it’s for work, school, or personal reasons. Life without a video conferencing tool these days can be very dreary. So obviously it’s beyond annoying if said video conferencing app starts acting up and you are stuck with a less than properly working app.

Camera Not Working

Let’s start with the most common but also the most annoying problem from the bunch. The “camera not working” issue has to be the most distressing because what’s the point of a video conference without a working camera? Not much. But there are few quick and easy fixes you could try that almost always work.

It is possible that Zoom might have the incorrect camera chosen and you can verify the same from Zoom settings. Go to ‘Video’ from Zoom settings and see that the listed webcam against the ‘Camera’ option is the correct one. If it isn’t, select the same from the drop-down menu.

Make sure the camera isn’t in use by any other app. Zoom cannot access your camera if that’s the case. If you are not sure whether it is in use or not, then close any app that could be using your camera. But most webcams have a white light next to them that turns on when it’s in use, so that should make it easy for you to deduce.

Confirm that Windows isn’t blocking access to the camera and also that Zoom and other apps have permission to access your camera. Open your privacy settings from the Windows settings, and go to ‘Camera’ permissions. Then make sure that toggle for the settings ‘Allow Apps to access your Camera’ and ‘Allow desktop apps to access your Camera’ is on. Turn it on if it isn’t.

Check that your anti-virus software isn’t blocking the camera access. A lot of anti-virus software provide privacy protection and it’s easy that it might have slipped through the cracks.

Audio Not Working

Almost as common as the above problem and just as annoying, if not more is the issue of “audio not working”. At least without the video, you can still make it work as an audio call but without the audio, what’s the point of being in the meeting anymore? Thankfully, you can fix this with some basic troubleshooting tips.

Before heading on to some serious troubleshooting, check that you haven’t accidentally put yourself on mute if others can’t hear your audio. Also, if you can’t hear other participants, make sure that your audio device (speakers, headphones, etc.) are working properly.

Confirm that Zoom is using the right microphone. This can be a problem if there is more than one microphone available in your system – physical or virtual. Go to ‘Audio’ settings from the Zoom settings, and check that the correct device is showing against the ‘Microphone’ option. Otherwise, change it from the drop-down menu.

Make sure that the access for the Microphone is on and Windows isn’t blocking it. Go to Privacy from the windows settings and open Microphone permissions. Confirm that the Microphone access for the device is on. If it isn’t, change it to on. Additionally, also make sure the toggle for ‘Allow apps to access your microphone’ is on otherwise Zoom cannot access it.

Echoes During a Call

One of the most headache-inducing problems people face in calls is the echo. And although in most instances, it seems like there’s not much you can do about it. But that’s not true. Like any other issue, there are a few things you can try to fix it.

Zoom has an advanced ‘Echo cancellation’ option. By default, it set to ‘Auto’. When you are experiencing an echo, you can tweak the settings and hope that it solves the problem. Open settings and go to ‘audio’ settings from the navigation panel on the left. Then, go to Advanced settings.

Now, click on the drop-down menu next to ‘Echo cancellation’ and select ‘Aggressive’ from the list of the options.

If it doesn’t solve the problem, try one of the other fixes.

It’s possible that the reason for the echo is that someone in the call has the computer audio as well as the phone audio active at the same time. The only solution then is that the person would have to choose one out of the two and manually leave the other. You can ask them to do so.

Another reason could be that someone might be using external speakers and their microphone is picking up the sound from the speakers creating the audio feedback. Recommend to the meeting participants to not use external speakers while on a call.

One more scenario could lead to echo during calls. Multiple participants could be attending the meeting while being in close proximity to each other. In such a case, they will either have to use headphones or move away from each other.

Problems with Screen Sharing

Sharing your screen is an essential part of the whole remote working package. So, it goes without saying that experiencing problems with screen sharing can be a deal-breaker for many users.

When sharing your screen, there are a few things to keep in mind to steer clear of troubles. Screen sharing requires a good internet connection, so check your connection speed before starting a screen sharing session. If you’re still experiencing trouble, stop your video before starting a sharing session. It should free up bandwidth for a smooth sharing experience.

If the problem is that other participants in the meeting can’t hear the audio from your computer while screen sharing, it’s because you didn’t share your computer audio with them. Zoom needs you to explicitly share the audio. If you’re already sharing your screen, click on the ‘More’ option (three dots) on the meeting toolbar and select ‘Share computer sound’ from the menu.

You can also enable this option before starting the sharing session. When the window to choose the screen you want to share opens, enable the checkbox for ‘Share computer sound’ from the bottom left corner of the window.

If the issue is a black screen during a sharing session, you might be facing an issue larger than a slow internet connection. The automatic switching of the graphic card (such as an NVIDIA card) could be the reason.

To solve this, open the Control Panel, go to ‘Hardware and Sound’ and open ‘NVIDIA Control Panel’.

Then switch to the ‘Program Settings’ tab.

Now under the ‘Select a Program to Customize’ option, click on the ‘Add’ button and add the ‘Cpthost.exe’ file from the Zoom bin. You’ll find the file at the location C:/>Users>YOURUSERNAME>AppData>Roaming>Zoom>bin

Now, click on the drop-down menu under ‘Select the preferred graphics processor for this program’ and select ‘Integrated Graphics’ from the list of options.

Finally, click on the ‘Apply’ button and try screen sharing with Zoom again.

Not Receiving Emails from Zoom

Another common problem users face with Zoom is not receiving emails from Zoom, both activation and notification emails. Remember that although for most servers the email is received within a few minutes, some servers might take 30 minutes or longer so you’ll have to wait.

You should also check your spam or junk folder as a lot of emails get thrown into these.

If you are not receiving emails at all and your organization manages your email, the problem might not be at your end. Check with your organization’s IT admin and make sure that Zoom’s IP addresses are whitelisted by your company’s email server.

Zoom is a popular video conferencing service program, it allows users to connect with each other no matter where they are. But it could be annoying when you can’t connect to Zoom before the video meeting. Don’t worry, this post has collected a list of fixes to solve the Zoom connecting issues. 

1. Join through the web browser

Shutting down Zoom completely and restart is the first choice for most people. If it’s not working, you can try joining through the web browser after deleting the app. It works for some users. At least you can join the meeting.

2. Check Zoom server status

If Zoom is the only app that couldn’t connect to the internet, you need to check Zoom servers’ status. They probably down at the moment. 

Go to https://status.zoom.us/ to check the status of the Zoom server. If you see issues displayed, you’d better wait until the Zoom developer team fix the server issues. Then relaunch Zoom to check.

3. Restart your router

If Zoom is not the only app that can’t connect to the internet, you need to check your network. Most of the network connection problems are related to the router. You might want to check your router and see if there are any firmware updates.

  • Turn off your device.
  • Turn off your router and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Leave the router over 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the router and turn it on.
  • Check to see if your Zoom is working properly now.

4. Disable antivirus software

It’s common to see some antivirus software or firewalls are interfering with apps and cause issues on computers. Check antivirus software and firewall to make sure they aren’t blocking Zoom. 

To do so, you need to disable antivirus software and your firewalls temporarily, then reconnect Zoom to see if the issue is fixed or not.

If they’re the culprit, adding Zoom into the whitelist would fix the issue. Or replacing the antivirus software with an alternate.

5. Use a VPN

When there are issues with your internet connection to the Zoom servers, the VPN might get you rid of the trouble. The VPN allows you to connect to Zoom using a different IP address while giving you online privacy and anonymity.

If nothing happens, you might try to uninstall and reinstall Zoom.

In the world of unified communications, few collaboration tools have taken off with such ferocity as Zoom. As Zoom encroaches on the enterprise space, it's ease of use and flexibility in a turbulent workplace is boosting its popularity.

With more and more users in the business world switching to the Zoom app from other UC platforms, many IT departments are struggling. The UC collaboration market is set to reach $3.2 billion in 2021, with 85% of employees using multiple platforms . This means IT teams have to contend with a growing portfolio of applications on a daily basis (sometimes up to 5 different video conferencing tools at the same time) as well as the rising risks of shadow IT.

Zoom meeting issues and Zoom troubleshooting can become a real concern, tying up IT departments who are already stretched to the limit.

Most common Zoom issues

We'll start with some of the most common problems and walk through the steps to fix them, but before doing so, you should check a few things first. These few basic checks before you join a Zoom call may help curtail issues before they require more detailed attention, and allow Zoom meetings to proceed without glitches.

1.Check Zoom's service status

The first thing you should do is check Zoom's status page . This shows the current status of each connection component of Zoom, such as meetings, video webinars, and cloud recording. With this, you can determine if the problem is on your end or Zoom's.

However, but you may see "Degraded Performance" or "Under Maintenance", so if this is the case, scroll further down to see additional information about issues, as well as updates and estimated resolution times. .

A Zoom host controls allow a meeting organizer to control much of the activity in meeting. For example, a host can restrict or allow participants to share a screen, and can even mute users. This could be a problem if they haven’t configured their settings properly. If a meeting participant who is not a host is unable to share a screen, the host should go to the bottom arrow next to screen sharing and select “Advanced Sharing Options.” Here, the host can permit sharing for all participants.

Camera or audio not functioning

If you've already checked your audio and video before starting your Zoom meeting, there could be other reasons why your webcam or audio is not functioning. Try these troubleshooting solutions:

1.Make sure the following settings are not checked so that you can join a call with your audio and video automatically enabled.

  • Do Not Connect to Audio
  • Turn Off My Video

2.Exit other related apps

If your webcam isn’t showing up, or your video is of poor quality, make sure all other programs that use the webcam are closed. Zoom may not be able to use the camera if it’s currently accessed by a different application.

3. Reinstall Zoom .

If you've tried everything, then a last resort is to download Zoom again and reinstall it.

Audio echo and feedback are common problems during Zoom calls. Try these solutions:

1.Limit the input

If someone has both computer and telephone audio active at the same time, ask them to either disconnect the telephone call or exit PC-based audio during the conference by clicking the  Up  arrow next to the microphone icon and choosing  Leave Computer Audio.

2. Try moving external speakers

Zoom lagging or freezing during a meeting

1. Try a different connection

If you're experiencing bad video connection during a Zoom call on a mobile device, try moving to an area with a better connection. If you're on a desktop computer, if possible use a wired Ethernet connection. Moving closer to a local router may also help, and if possible use the faster 5GHz connection.

2. Check the connection speed

Zoom meetings typically involve many participants, and when a meeting has multiple people in a team setting, you should aim for a download speed of around 1Mbps and the upload speed of around 800Kbps.

3. Adjust Zoom settings

Decreasing the amount of bandwidth you're using can help with video lag or freeze during Zoom meetings. Try unchecking the  Enable HD  and  Touch Up My Appearance  options on the  Video  panel in  Settings . The main aim is to reduce graphics-intensive tasks by turning off every feature that you don’t need.

Troubleshooting problems with your webcam in Zoom

If your camera is not working in Zoom, you can still participate in meetings with just your microphone. However, it's always better to chat face-to-face, so it's worth the effort to fix your Zoom webcam.

Instructions in this article apply to the desktop and web versions of Zoom as well as the Zoom mobile apps for Android and iOS.

Causes of Zoom Camera Not Working

If Zoom is not detecting your camera, it could be due to a few reasons:

  • Your camera is disabled in your device's settings.
  • The webcam is not selected in Zoom.
  • Interference from other programs or devices.
  • Outdated or corrupt device drivers .
  • Problems with your camera's hardware.

Some Lenovo PCs have known compatibility issues with Zoom , which require a specific fix. Zoom also has compatibility issues with macOS 10.7 .

Make sure to test your Zoom camera before you join a meeting to make sure others will be able to see you.

How to Fix Zoom Webcam Not Working

Follow these steps in order to get your camera working in Zoom:

Make sure your camera is connected and turned on . If you use an external webcam for Zoom, check the connecting cable for damage, and try connecting it to a different USB port if possible. For wireless webcams, check your Bluetooth settings and make sure the device's battery is charged.

Some external webcams also have a physical on/off switch.

Make sure your camera is selected in Zoom. During a meeting, select the up arrow next to the camera icon and make sure the desired webcam is chosen.

If the camera icon has a line through it in your Zoom window, select the icon to enable your camera.

Close other programs that can access your camera. Other software could be competing with Zoom for your webcam.

Check your device settings . Go to the camera settings on your device to make sure it's not disabled.

Check your app permissions . Make sure Zoom has permission to use your camera by going to your device's app settings.

Update your device's drivers . Windows users should go into the Device Manager and check to make sure the camera's drivers are up-to-date.

Update your Mac . If you're on a Mac running macOS 10.7, upgrade to a newer version of the macOS operating system .

Restart your device . A reboot fixes most computer problems because it closes any ongoing processes that could be interfering with software or hardware , such as your camera.

Change Zoom's Advanced Video Settings . Zoom provides advanced tools designed to enhance video playback, but they sometimes have the opposite result. If your video continues to be distorted, open Zoom while not in a meeting and select the Settings gear , then choose the Video tab and select Advanced to adjust these options.

Make sure the correct camera is chosen and that the box beside Turn off my video when joining meeting isn't checked.

Reinstall Zoom. If you're using the mobile or desktop versions of Zoom, uninstall the program and redownload it from the Apple App Store, Google Play , or the Zoom website . Alternatively, you can try using the web version.

If you're still having trouble with your camera in Zoom, you can still participate in meetings with your microphone or by dialing-in to Zoom .

Zoom Webcam Not Working on Lenovo Laptops

Some Lenovo PCs have a default feature that prevents Zoom from accessing the camera. On Windows 10 and Windows 8, download Lenovo Vantage and use it to disable the Camera Privacy Mode . On Windows 7, open the Lenovo Web Conferencing program and select Enable your laptop webcam .

To turn off your webcam video on Zoom, select Stop Video from the bottom left of the screen. Other people won't be able to see you. On a PC, you can press Alt + V to turn the video on and off.

Log in to Zoom, select your profile picture > Settings > select Video tab and hover over your camera preview. Next, select Rotate until your camera is rotated correctly.

To test your camera, log in to Zoom, select your profile picture > select Settings > Video tab. You'll see a preview video from the currently selected webcam so you can tell your video is working.

Until 2020, Zoom was not well known on the internet, but it gained worldwide renown with the new communication needs imposed by the pandemic. Widely adhered to by companies and schools, today it has millions of users around the world, even though there are other options, such as Telegram .

So, in this article, we’re going to talk about some of the most common problems found in Zoom and how to fix them.

  • 1. Pay attention to join requests to filter who will enter the meeting;

  • 3. Enable the lounge to be able to view participants who clicked on the link and remove any intruders (go to Security , click Enable lounge );
  • 4. Lock the meeting after all participants have already joined. This will prevent other people from joining even with ID and password;
  • 5. Remove intruding participants and disable the option that allows removed participants to come back (go to Account Management , then Account Settings , go to the Meeting tab, then turn off the Allow Removed Participants button);
  • 6. Don’t share your meeting ID on social media or WhatsApp groups, let alone your meeting password;
  • 7. Always update Zoom to the latest version.

3. Issues with the Zoom virtual screen

The virtual screen is a very useful resource and can be a handy tool for those who don’t have a Chroma Key (green background), despite being a recommendation.

The fact is that, as it is a recent technology, Zoom may have issues that sometimes cause a certain headache, but those are fixable.

  • 1. Make sure your cell phone or computer meets the requirements necessary for the feature to work. You can check it out here ;
  • 2. Check your lighting (it is recommended that it be uniform)
  • 3. Make sure the background is a solid color;
  • 4. don’t get too far from the screen;
  • 5. If you’re using a green background, don’t use any accessories of the same color, such as a shirt and a cap.

4. Disappearing features

This problem can have a simple cause: you are accessing Zoom from the browser version, which is quite limited. Therefore, it is recommended to always use the application, which can be downloaded for both computers and mobile phones.

Some of the functions that are not present in the browser version are:

  • 1. Screen sharing;
  • 2. Display of upcoming meetings;
  • 3. Calendar events view;
  • 4. Viewing, editing, and starting or deleting scheduled meetings.

5. Problems with performance

  • 1. Before anything else, check if your internet is stable;

  • 4. Restart the application if you are on your mobile phone, close and open it if you are on your computer;
  • 5. Restart your local router;
  • 6. If you can, disconnect some devices that are connected to your local router;
  • 7. Try connecting to another network.

These options should solve the performance issue and if none of them work, you need to wait to try again later.

6. Audio interference

This problem is also common, but most of the time it can come from participants who don’t silence their microphones. It happens because of the sensitivity of the microphone.

Any noise can cause interference and make it difficult for the participant who is speaking during a meeting to be heard, which is often unpleasant.

Make sure you or any of the participants have outside noise, such as TV on, people talking, children playing, or anything like that.

To resolve this issue, the Host needs to silence all participants at the very beginning of the video call.

An important tip is, if possible, for the participants to use headphones, but if not, to avoid using external speakers or putting the cell phone on speaker mode.

There's nothing worse than joining on a video call and not being able to hear what is going on, or the others on the line not being able to hear you. After all, even a lousy video feed can turn a video call into a regular audio-only conversation, and honestly, that's not the worst thing in the world ( after all, you should see how I'm dressed right now ). There are a few audio problems common on Zoom calls that have simple fixes, and we're going to walk you through how to quickly diagnose and remedy them in the steps below.

How to fix Zoom microphone problems on Desktop

Though the exact process may differ slightly from device to device, chances are you will need to grant Zoom permission to access the camera and microphone on your computer before you start your first call. If you are having audio issues, it could be that you breezed pass this step during setup, but not to worry — it can easily be fixed! Here's how to do it on a Mac.

  • Open the System Preferences app.
  • Click on Security and Privacy .
  • Enter your device password to log in.
  • Click on the Privacy tab .
  • Click on the Microphone tab in the left navigation bar.
  • Click to approve the Zoom app's use of your microphone.
  • Click on the Camera tab in the left navigation bar.
  • Click to approve the Zoom app's use of your camera (for video conferencing).

How to fix Zoom speaker problems on Desktop

If camera and microphone permissions are not the issue, perhaps some of the device's audio settings were inadvertently adjusted. Here's how to change them back.

  • Open the Zoom app on your desktop.
  • Click on the gear icon in the top right corner (or the zoom.us in the toolbar) to bring up the Zoom Settings menu.
  • Click on the Audio link on the left navigation bar.
  • Click on Test Speaker to make sure you can hear the audio output.
  • Click on Test Mic to make sure that others can hear your voice.
  • Click on the Join audio by computer when joining a meeting to save yourself a step next time.
  • Click on Mute microphone when joining a meeting in case you don't want inadvertent sounds disrupting the group at the start of a call.
  • Click Press and hold SPACE key to temporarily unmute yourself. (If others can't hear you at times, make sure you aren't accidentally resting your palms on the spacebar).
  • Click on the Advanced button at the bottom right of the app to adjust additional settings.
  • I recommend that you toggle the Suppress Persistent Background Noise, Suppress Intermittent Background Noise, and Echo Cancellation to Auto to help cover up unwanted sounds during your call.

How to fix Zoom microphone problems on Android and iPhone

The first thing you'll want to do is make sure that you've granted Zoom permission to access and use your device's microphone.

  • Open the Settings app .
  • Tap on Apps & notifications .
  • Tap on the Zoom ap .
  • Tap on Permissions .
  • Tap the Microphone toggle to allow Zoom to use the device's microphone.

Once that's done, you should be ready to record. If you're still having problems, let's take a look at the settings within the app.

  • Before you start or join a call, tap on the Settings icon in the bottom left corner.
  • Tap on Meeting .
  • Tap Always Mute My Microphone toggle to off.
  • If no one can hear you, it may be that you forgot to share your audio. If that's the case, tap on the screen to bring up the bottom menu.
  • Tap on the Join Audio button in the bottom left corner.
  • Tap call via Device Audio .
  • It's also possible that you accidentally muted yourself, or that the call host muted you. If that's the case, tap on the screen and look at the microphone icon in the bottom left corner. If it is red with a line through it, you're muted.
  • Tap on Unmute to unmute your mic and start speaking.
  • If that doesn't work, go into your device multitasker to make sure no other apps are using your mic (audio apps, podcast apps, maps, etc) and force close them.

How to fix Zoom speaker problems on Android and mobile

  • If you can't hear anything, tap the screen to see if your speaker(s) are on. You'll see the speaker icon in the top left corner.
  • Tap the speaker icon to turn your speaker(s) back on.
  • If that doesn't work, try using headphones .
  • If that still doesn't work, try restarting the app and rejoining the call.

However, it is crucial that the problem gets fixed quickly , especially in important meetings. Here are some solutions to try out if there’s no sound in your Zoom meeting.

Specify and test the zoom audio settings, test audio playback and recording devices in a meeting, clear browser cache, check the audio output from your computer, check the speaker in the zoom app, check the microphone in the zoom app, check smartphone audio settings, restart your smartphone.

Video conferences have many advantages. On the one hand, they make it easy to communicate no matter the location of the participants - be it with friends, family members, customers, or colleagues. On the other hand, a video conferencing program like Zoom makes it possible to organize large meetings and presentations online in a very flexible way . Professionalism is particularly important in this context. Common technical errors that occur time and again in virtual video conferences are difficulties with sharing the screen in Zoom, changing the background in Zoom , and problems with audio equipment.

There may be a number of reasons why other participants cannot hear you or why no sound is coming from the Zoom meeting. Typical error sources include:

  • Step 6: Under “Microphone”, you can test the audio input, select the microphone from the drop-down menu, and enable automatic sound enhancement.

  • Step 7: By checking the “Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting” box, you instruct Zoom to automatically connect to your computer audio during meetings.

  • Step 8: With the “Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting” option disabled, you will always receive a prompt to connect to audio before the meeting. In this prompt window, you can also perform an audio test and enable automatic connection to computer audio.

  • Step 9: If you attend a lot of meetings or regularly join meetings, you may want to reconsider the “ Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting ” option to avoid accidentally becoming the active speaker. However, this could be the cause of the Zoom audio not working so remember to turn the microphone back on when needed.

Zoom: No sound – how to solve the problem

When it comes to small meetings consisting of two or three people, first ask the question:

  • Have the other participants muted their own microphones or speakers?

If they haven’t and you can’t hear or be heard in a Zoom meeting, you can assume that the problem is on your end. Here are a few possible solutions.

Using the desktop client (Windows/Mac)

During a meeting, test your audio devices in the audio settings. To do this, go to the arrow next to the microphone icon and click on “ Audio Settings… ” or “ Test Speaker & Microphone… ”. Here you can test your speakers/headphones and microphone respectively or change selected devices.

Too much temporary data in the browser cache can cause blocked audio scripts on Zoom in rare cases. To clear your browser cache , open the browser settings menu, and clear both the cache and the cookies .

If the Zoom audio doesn’t seem to be working, it may also be due to the computer volume . Check if the volume on your computer is muted or too low. To do this, click the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of Windows 10. To open advanced settings, right-click on the speaker icon and then select “ Open Volume mixer ”.

With macOS , you can also find volume control options via the menu bar or System Preferences.

Using the mobile client (Android/iOS)

If there’s no sound in the Zoom meeting, check your built-in smartphone speakers. Look to see if you can see an X next to the speaker icon. If so, activate the speakers using the buttons or by tapping the speaker icon .

If the other participants can’t hear you in the meeting, check your built-in microphone. If you see that you’re muted, tap the microphone icon to unmute yourself.

If you are having audio problems in a Zoom meeting on your smartphone, it is often because the device’s volume is too low . Check the volume using the volume buttons on your smartphone.

If you habitually set your smartphone to silent or vibrate, check the audio profile on Android or iOS to see if the sound is turned on.

As simple as it sounds, rebooting often helps solve audio problems. However, this is only an alternative if you don’t have important, time-limited meetings.
